Dream job? No but opportunity knocked & I answered!

Opportunity: a time or set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something – a chance for employment or promotion.

Back in January I wrote a blog I named: An Update – Job Hunting.  I want to fill you in on what’s been happening since I secured that job, and actually it is part of the reason I have not been ‘blogging’ so much recently.

Six months ago I secured a role after a tough period of job hunting  – and to be fair – it was a role that I accepted with not enough enthusiasm but with plenty of gratitude. It wasn’t my dream job to be honest it was a starting point.

I found the work interesting initially, however it wasn’t too long before it became repetitive. I persevered and thought if I could just push through until the end of the year I’d look for another job then.  About 3 months after starting an email came around asking if there was anyone interested in an opportunity to step into another role. I immediately put my hand up and began a 4-week trial to test my ability to do this new role.

I tackled this new challenge in the same way as before – I put my head down, and quickly learnt what was expected and set about delivering it. I was offered the role on a permanent basis and after starting in early December I was promoted on the 1st April.

Now, I’m not telling you this to show-off – I’m telling you because when you need to work to provide a roof over your families head, you just have to get on with it! And having the right attitude comes first!

I read that ‘Our attitude is often the only difference between success and failure’ – and that’s the lesson I want to share with you.  We are all faced with challenges in life and it’s how we tackle them that is the difference. I’m no saint – I rant & rave, kick and scream against lots of things – but I have learnt through trial and error, that the only way to get through some things is to adjust my attitude. It’s not easy but it is necessary  – “You can’t control the wind But you can adjust your sails”.  I do like this saying.

On the 1st of May, I again changed direction – and that job I applied for back in September 2015 and never heard from back the recruitment specialist, is my new role. From my starting point of working within the team to now managing it within 6-months is nothing short of amazing 🙂 I’m grateful for the faith put in me to do this, and the opportunity that presented itself.

The truth is I didn’t work myself into the spotlight, or push myself into a place of prominence. I merely put my head into what was expected and delivered what was wanted.

So what are my lessons from this past 6-months?

  1. Don’t be afraid to start over after losing or quitting your job – believe in yourself, accept what has happened and get on with your life.
  2. Let go of what you can’t control and focus on what you can control
  3. If an opportunity presents itself, go for it! Success starts with opportunity
  4. Happiness isn’t about getting what you want all the time. It’s about loving what you have and being grateful for it!

    Opportunity
    Success starts with opportunity

Happy living xx
